about

This recording was made in January 2011, just before we played the NOW now Festival in Sydney. The vague idea we talked about was to combine our doom and dirge with more of a 'free improv' approach to things (as opposed to not-free improvisation?) I went with a contact mic'd acoustic bouzouki instead of the usual electric, as well as a looser approach to using software (ie less reliance on repeated loops) than what I'd taken on earlier recordings. Aside from our set at the festival, this actually ended up being the last time I used a laptop to process my strings. Matt used pedals to process his vocals as he had done on previous occasions, already free enough. The result shares some similarities with our earlier recordings but it was different enough at the time that we felt it sat outside the Untermorast sound, so it stayed on my hard drive. Ten years on we've decided to release it, a little weirder perhaps (not a bad thing) but it still sounds like Untermorast after all. Our appearance at NOW now didn't go so well in the end due to ill health, sleep deprivation and frazzled nerves but this recording is a bit closer to what we were aiming for. - T
